if i recall correctly, the whole content vs style thing with font/span applies to bold/strong in the very same way. i think that might've been the whole reason strong works on screenreaders while bold doesn't, which is the main reason i've always tended to use it and em instead of b or i
but unfortunately i don't know the theories and mechanics of the coding so much as the applications of it, i usually just listen to the people i know who do when they talk about it
